World's Big Sleep Out - 7 December

Can you join Beata and Romero’s People Team in making a difference in the lives of those who still are lost and without a ‘home’?

💗

The World’s Big Sleep Out event will be held at the Gabba on the 7th of December 2019.  The Romero Centre has been very fortunate to be chosen as the charity mission to be benefiting 50% of the funds raised from the event, which aims at eliminating global homelessness.

The Romero Centre works tirelessly to support people seeking asylum who are without income and cannot afford home or food. During the last year Romero supported over 400 people seeking asylum with issues related to homelessness. Having this opportunity to raise awareness and funds in support of homeless families, is an enormous opportunity for us and the Romero’s people.

The Romero people are deeply moved by the World’s  Big Sleep Out ( www.bigsleepout.com ) and the Mercy Community’s commitment and dedication to address the needs of those who are separated by war or conflicts that have lost their homes.

At the Romero Centre, we know only too well that without a home, one is truly alone. At Romero, we understand that a roof over one’s head is only a part of the ‘homelessness story’ and that only a welcoming and accepting community can change cold walls into heart-warming and family safe homes.

You can join Beata and Romero’s People team in making a difference in the lives of those who still are lost without a ‘home’.

Or create a team of your own at  www.bigsleepout.com/join-a-sleep-out/brisbane
JustGiving sends your donation straight to Romero Centre through Mercy Community so that they can put your generosity to good use!

No one leave home unless

Home, by Warsan Shire (British-Somali poet)

no one leaves home unless
home is the mouth of a shark
you only run for the border
when you see the whole city running as well
your neighbours running faster than you
breath bloody in their throats
the boy you went to school with
who kissed you dizzy behind the old tin factory
is holding a gun bigger than his body
you only leave home
when home won't let you stay.
no one leaves home unless home chases you
fire under feet
hot blood in your belly
it's not something you ever thought of doing
until the blade burnt threats into
your neck
and even then you carried the anthem under
your breath
only tearing up your passport in an airport toilets
sobbing as each mouthful of paper
made it clear that you wouldn't be going back.
you have to understand,
that no one puts their children in a boat
unless the water is safer than the land
no one burns their palms
under trains
beneath carriages
no one spends days and nights in the stomach of a truck
feeding on newspaper unless the miles travelled
means something more than journey.
no one crawls under fences
no one wants to be beaten
pitied
no one chooses refugee camps
or strip searches where your
body is left aching
or prison,
because prison is safer
than a city of fire
and one prison guard
in the night
is better than a truckload
of men who look like your father
no one could take it
no one could stomach it
no one skin would be tough enough
the
go home blacks
refugees
dirty immigrants
asylum seekers
sucking our country dry
niggers with their hands out
they smell strange
savage
messed up their country and now they want
to mess ours up
how do the words
the dirty looks
roll off your backs
maybe because the blow is softer
than a limb torn off
or the words are more tender
than fourteen men between
your legs
or the insults are easier
to swallow
than rubble
than bone
than your child body
in pieces.
I want to go home,
but home is the mouth of a shark
home is the barrel of the gun
and no one would leave home
unless home chased you to the shore
unless home told you
to quicken your legs
leave your clothes behind
crawl through the desert
wade through the oceans
drown
save
be hunger
beg
forget pride
your survival is more important
no one leaves home until home is a sweaty voice in your ear
saying-
leave,
run away from me now
I don’t know what I’ve become
but I know that anywhere

is safer than here.

Music Talk and Q&A with Dawn Barrington

What an inspirational evening we experienced with Dawn Barrington. Here is an example of one person who believed she could make a difference!!! Check out her home page.

In one of the most moving parts of the evening, Dawn read a poem written by one of the Manus Island detainees, seeking asylum in Australia from discrimination in Iran.

These are some of the actions Dawn believes that we as individuals can take.

10-year old needs our help!

A 10-year-old boy who has been on Nauru has recently been enrolled at Cannon Hill State School. While the family is living in the community, the father is in detention at Pinkenba. Ms Chris Ling who is principal at the school has put out a request to R4R for assistance. Obviously, the young boy has very high support needs and Ms Ling has released an aide from all other duties to be his constant support.  While the school been able to access $3,000 towards this, it will require a further $3000 just to get through this term.  The principal is confident that given the right supports, they can assist this boy to begin to deal with the trauma he has experienced. Ms Ling is asking if Redlands for Refugees has any capacity to respond to this need.

Can you assist?

Teardrops and Candlesticks

This is a powerful poem by Councillor Jonathan Sri, a Greens councillor in the Brisbane City Council. Please beware that Councillor Sri uses some strong language that may offend some viewers.

R4R does not endorse any particular political party but rather supports policies that seek justice for refugees and people seeking asylum. R4R thanks Councillor Sri for permission to share his poem.
